Did He Just Call Me Old?????

Do you remember the first time someone called you "Ma'am" as opposed to "Miss"? Ok, so this may not apply directly to my male readers, but you know what I mean.

Today I went for an interview. I applied for a part time job writing consumer reviews for a new website. The interviewer looked to be in his mid to late 20's. He asked about my writing experience and Internet experience. I told him about my blog and about the online communities and message boards that I participate in. Then he said something to the effect of, "we don't find the older generation using the Internet as much for browsing as we do the younger generation." I have only been referred to as the "older generation" by my little sister who is 10 year younger than me. She's really more like a niece than a sister to me.

Well interviewer, I'm a 30 something stay at home mom who uses the Internet all the time! My computer almost never turns off during the day. I search for all kinds of things. I meet new people all the time. I visit new blogs every day! And I'm not the only one!

Moms are also a large consumer group. We make decisions about our families clothes, food, vacations, entertainment, education, house repairs and services! My husband doesn't actually buy much of anything on his own. He asks me to do it!

Let me get off my soap box now.

In other news, I convinced my 6 year old to let the ants in his ant farm go. (If you missed the entry about the ants, you can read about them here.) So I no longer purposely keep insects in my house. But I did tell him that we could look for new ants next week or possibly even order new ants in the mail. The company makes the ant farm also has a mail order business for ants. I certainly hope this business isn't run out of someone's house. Could you imagine having to keep that many ants in your house on a regular basis? And then prepare them for shipping? So don't laugh if soon I'm tell you that I actually ordered ants to come to my house through the mail.

Interesting. Did you provide the interviewer with your take on your (and the rest of the "older generation's") use of the Internet? That sounds like it could be quite the fun job!

And ummm let me see if I get this... you're going to let the ants (that you've voluntarily kept in your house) go, where they may then reenter your house but not in the "safety" of the ant farm. AND you're talking about ordering more? Please explain!

I think you would be perfect for that job. And God knows you are not part of the older generation.. you are in the IN generation. I do hope you gave that young whippersnapper the evil eye.

Clearly he hasn't seen all the news tories on how persuasive us "mommy bloggers" can be. His loss.

And please, for the love of all that is good, DO NOT order more ants.

I find that the "older" generation does alot more with the internet than the younger ones! When I hear the younger students at school talk they are either playing games or hitting youtube. They only shop online at holidays, not like me where I shop every chance I get lol. Mr. Interviewer was obviously confused.

Silly young boys. Maybe the "older" 30ish Moms had a computer and programmed in DOS before the boy was even born? Hmmmm? I think "our" generation is very savvy computer-wise, and just because we don't do 1337 speak and see the need for typing out whole words (ne1 L8?) doesn't mean we don't spend time online. ;)

As for the ants.. well, it is quite interesting. :)

Ha! I guess I'm old too. Someone should tell that kid that interviewed you that 30 is the new 20,40 the new 30,50 the new 40 and so on and so forth. it cracks me up when I get called old.Of course it is usually by kids. Oh, a lady came up to me once and rubbed my tummy and commented on my "pregnancy". ha! you should have seen her face when I told her that I'm not pregnant, just fat! I know, thats not related to being old but I just thought I'd throw that in there cause it was funny.
