I'm Not From Around Here

It's raining. According to the weather guesser man, it's not supposed to stop raining until about next May or so. I live in Seattle. It happens that way every winter.

I moved here three years ago from New Jersey. It rains in New Jersey. For a day or two at a time. And when it does, everyone goes inside. Or if we need to go somewhere, we get our umbrellas and go.

Not in Seattle.

The rain doesn't stop people in Seattle. No one goes inside when it rains. I even got a letter from the school principal making sure that parents (especially those that moved here from New Jersey) knew that the kids will be playing outside during recess even if it is raining. The school does have some covered areas outside for the kids to play under, but my kids like to get wet. A slide with a puddle at the bottom is irresistible to my 5 year old. So my kids are soaked after recess.

No one in Seattle uses umbrellas. Using an umbrella here is like wearing a huge sign that says, "I'm a tourist."

People don't stop when it rains. They still go jogging. They still bike to work. They still go outside for recess.

Not me. I got all ready to go running this morning. It hadn't started to rain until five minutes before it was time to leave. Then it started. So I took the kids to the bus stop. And I brought my tourist umbrella with me. Sure enough none of the other kids or moms at the bus stop had umbrellas. I wonder if they have some secret duck-like hair that is inbred in the local Seattle population... Running will have to wait until tomorrow or maybe till May.

Recess in the rain? You've got to be kidding!

Recess in the rain is just ASKING for wet, sick kids...I know rain doesn't make you sick, germs do, but your resistance is a lot lower when you are wet and chilly :P
Glad I still live on the East Coast, where people use umbrellas!

That is astounding to me. So no rain hats, nothing? Is the rain torrential?

LOL; its like living in Montana; nothing stops them when it snows or is cold outside; people run, people take their babies out, etc. I think they are bred much differently than those of us from New Jersey or Southern California

Hee, hee. The rain stopped me this morning too. I actually got dressed and headed out. I started running and gave up 2 minutes out! Thank God I don't live in Seattle!

Yup, I'm in NY and you better believe I don't go running in the rain! Your kids go outside for recess? That's not right.

Haha, that is so funny. Living in SoCal all my life I wouldn't know what to do with rain all winter :)
I would surely be with umbrella, and only outside if I totally needed to be.

I guess they're just trying to prove that "they are hearty folk" and can take the wet weather. Let me ask a question, do people bother with winter coats when the weather turns cold?

Are you sure Seattle hasn't shifted to Canada? We're in month six of unsually wet weather and, not being born and bred Seattle types, we always reach for the umbrella and the rain gear and we are almost convinced we could melt if we get wet so we cover up really well.

I can see the Seattle teachers insisting that the kids are let outdoors - lol! One rain day and an indoor recess can drive you crazy! Months of them? I think the teachers would want to cry. So I guess it means sending a lot of changes of clothes to school for you?

Maybe it's because I'm a South Jersey native, but not using an umbrella and having kids play in the rain is just crazy. Our school won't send the kids out for recess if it looks like it might rain. I guess the like getting wet in Seattle.

WHen I went to Seattle, ages ago, I noticed that no one carried umbrellas and that they seemed impervious to the weather.

Wow. I had no idea! I guess it's true. The last time I was in Seattle, I whipped out an umbrella. I was a total tourist.

Ha ha, come on I live in the UK and you know what we are famous for?? Rain! If life ground to a holt because of the rain, no one would ever leave their houses!

I get going outside in the rain... that part I'm cool with. But wow. I have to admit I like your excuse for avoiding running. Think I can use it? Even though I run in the gym?

Sounds like colds n flu waiting to happen- Must be tough to convince kids not to jump in the puddles-
