What Would You Do?

Today my husband picked up our mail from our mailbox at the bottom of our street. It's a mailbox like you might see at an apartment complex. Each resident has their own box with a key. Today there was something in our mailbox by mistake. It was addressed to a house on our street with one digit different than ours. Normally I would just walk over and give it to the person. But this was different. This was a Playboy magazine.

My husband asked me why we received it in the mail. As if it were my fault. (Yeah right!) I looked at the address and discovered the mistake right away. But I wasn't going to ring their doorbell! I thought about throwing it in the trash. And I didn't want to leave it on my kitchen counter waiting for the next time that I go to the mailbox.

I decided to make a special trip to the mail box and drop it in the "outgoing mail" slot. As I stepped out my front door with the magazine in my hands, I sawmy 6 year old neighbor. I tried to hide the magazine in my coat. How embarrassing! Then I saw my neighbor across the street. It was the wife of the man whose magazine I was hiding under my coat! I waved and couldn't help but giggle and made my way to the mailbox with only having to pass one more elderly neighbor out walking her dog. That seemed like the longest one block walk of my entire life!

I'm so glad that magazine is gone. What would you do?

I think I would have discreetly left it on their doorstep -- in the middle of the night....

Funny you should ask... I've actually debating blogging on this but never get around to it. We bought our house from a lovely family. And after they moved, we started getting one of their magazines, as they hadn't updated their address. It was a gay uhhh lifestyle magazine. Needless to say, it isn't one that I'd scope through first then put back in the box. Since it was a forwarding issue, each time it came, I'd put a "Please FWD: no longer at this address" note on it, and it would be gone the next day. Until six months passed, when magazines no longer get forwarded. That time it stayed in our box. So I wrote a nice note on a piece of paper requesting that they forward their magazine and taped it to their magazine before dropping it in their new mailbox (they moved about five minutes away to a much bigger house -- mansion really). I never received another one in my mailbox after that :) But this one was their fault, not the postman's! I'd put it in a bag on their door or in the outgoing box though -- you did well!
