What's That For?

The other day I was watching TV. I think I was watching the news. My 6 year old was on the floor sorting out his Pokemon cards for the 835th time.

A commercial came on and I didn't pay any attention to it until my 6 year old looked up and asked, "Mom, what's that for?"

I looked at the TV. It was a commercial for carefree pantyliners.

So I did what any responsible mom would do. I pretended like I didn't hear him.

Maybe when he's old enough to stop sucking thumb at bedtime I'll stop pretending that I can't hear his question.

That's funny, Cookie. There was once a news item about a female General in the US Army who was gay and it was all over the news. My nieces were little then - probably your boys' ages. They were sitting at the bar in the kitchen eating lunch with their dad, when yet another report about that came on. "What's a lesbian, daddy?" the older one asked. Errr (thinking fast) - it's a girl who doesn't like boys, her dad said (knowing he should give a more thoughtful and considered answer, but he didn't have time to think about it). The younger daughter piped up and said, "Ooh ooh that's me! I don't like boys either!" And then he had to really explain. TV is tough, huh?

hahaha... yea, the pantyliner question. When I get those sorts of questions from my son, I'll say 'it's a woman thing'. Because he doesn't really need all the details at this point. However, if my daughter asks even though she's only 6 I give her a few more details because I remember how horrified I was the first time I heard I was going to BLEED for a few days every month... I figure if she hears about it from a young age it'll just be the way it is.

lol! I don't blame you. Too much information is really not necessary at certain ages.

One of my sons, when he was 7, suddenly asked (during dinner) what a condom was. My older son, who was 9 at the time said, "You mean condos. They're called condominums. Those are big buildings."

We still laugh about that to this day and I have to confess that we didn't correct them - not for a few more years. Every time we see ads for condos, we always laugh.

Is it wrong that my children also have no clue what those things are, and yet have stuck them all over the cabinets in my bathroom when I wasn't looking? I won't tell you what they did with the tampons.

And I have SO played hard-of-hearing many times before!

*giggle* *snort* Oops, did I snort, too? OMG the joys of parenting. This is yet another reason to be grateful for DVRs, no? ;)

You young mothers have it soooo much harder than I did. We did not have anything on television that we had to "explain" to the little ones.

Ha ha, your post and the comments cracked me up!

Yeah I've been asked many difficult questions like this from my daughters. It's amazing how I have selective hearing.

LOL! I don't blame you.

There's something about those pantyliners that are so fascinating. I was the same way as a child.

I always thought they were big, backward band-aids :)

My hearing is getting awfully selective these days, too!
